Udayana University (UU) - Bali, Indonesia

Bali International Program on Asian Studies (BIPAS)

Student comments:

”We’ve been here in Bali for 4 days now and I can already say that I love this place from the bottom of my heart."

"We’re staying at a luxurious villa and the monthly rent is not bad at all when shared by four people. Cleaning services, water, electricity and wireless Internet are all included in the rent."

”I’ve been surprised by the quality of teaching, even though different lecturers have very different teaching methods. The most interesting by far has been the course on Indonesian history, ethnology, culture and customs as well as the lecture series on South-West Asian economy. I believe these courses will be of most use to me in the future. The workshops and excursions have also been very interesting.”

Destination: Bali

Year after year, the island of Bali in Indonesia is voted the most enchanting travel and holiday destination in the whole world by readers of all major travel magazines. Bali's wide variety of attractions, the physical beauty of the island, and the year-round pleasant climate make Bali a place regarded by many visitors as the "Ultimate Island" or the "Island of the Gods'".

Bali may be small in size – you can drive around the entire coast in one long day – but its prominence as a destination is huge, and rightfully so. Ask travellers what Bali means to them and you’ll get as many answers as there are flowers on a frangipani tree. Virescent rice terraces, pulse-pounding surf, enchanting temple ceremonies, mesmerising dance performances and ribbons of beaches are just some of the images people cherish.

And those are just some of the more obvious qualities. A visit to Bali means that you are in the most visitor-friendly island of Indonesia. There are pleasures of the body, whether a massage on the beach or a hedonistic interlude in a sybaritic spa. Shopping that will put ‘extra bag’ at the top of your list. Food and drink ranging from the freshest local cuisine bursting with the flavours of the markets to food from around the globe, often prepared by chefs and served in restaurants that are world class. From a cold Bintang at sunset to an epic night clubbing, your social whirl is limited only by your own fortitude.

Small obviously doesn’t mean limited. The manic whirl of Kuta changes into the luxury of Seminyak. The artistic swirl of Ubud is a counterpoint to misty treks amid the volcanoes. Mellow beach towns like Amed, Lovina and Pemuteran can be found right round the coast and just offshore is the laid-back and idyllic Nusa Lembongan.

As you stumble upon the exquisite little offerings left all over the island that appear as if by magic, you’ll see that the tiny tapestry of colours and textures is a metaphor for Bali itself.

Application period: Open. Application deadline October 31st, 2010

(The autumn 2010 semester is being arranged Sep 1st - Dec 17th, 2010. The application period for the semester has ended.)

BIPAS courses:

International Tourism ManagementSyllabus
The Indonesian History, Ethnology, Culture and CustomsSyllabus
Economy and Business of South East AsiaSyllabus
Business Law and Legal Tradition on Trade and InvestmentSyllabus
Indonesian LanguageSyllabus

The study program consists of the five courses mentioned above. Students are expected to participate all of them. You can use the syllabuses when making a study plan to present to your possible home institution.

Lectures are provided from Monday to Wednesday and on Thursdays are held the workshops and site visits. Volunteers can also join charity acitivities at Seeds of Hope -orphanage.

One completed course is worth 3 credits, which is most often converted to 5 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) study credits.
Read more under study credits.

The program introduces the students to economics, business, trade, culture, language, and tourism with Asia as the central region. The students will also be able to interact with locals and fellow exchange students. The course lecturers are experienced with international backgrounds. Most of them have a degree from abroad.

In addition to the above-mentioned courses, Udayana University offers other courses to international students. However, the teaching language for these courses is typically Bahasa Indonesia and the courses are held by different faculties for a separate fee. You can ask about taking additional courses after arriving in Indonesia, because it’s easer to make arrangements face to face.

Who are the BIPAS semesters intended for?

The goal of the BIPAS semesters is to increase the students' knowledge of Indonesia and Asia in an international and inspiring environment. The program is intended for students who wish to experience a unique semester on a world-famous paradise island. The students who participate in the program want to combine academics, free time activities and unforgettable experiences to benefit their future.

In addition to studying, students have time for hobbies and traveling. Students who have participated in the program have praised the island’s beautiful scenery, friendly local people and innumerable free time activities.

Bali is a renowned surfer’s paradise and it also offers opportunities for playing golf. Despite being small in size, the island has a lot to offer for people of all ages. The white sandy beaches beckon sunbathers and those who are interested in culture can witness local dances and ceremonies. Balinese art is known around the world and the sunsets are breathtaking.

BIPAS is suitable for anyone who is interested in Asia, but doesn’t want to settle for more traditional options. The courses are interesting and they are held by lecturers who have international experience. The typical participants are students of business, technology, art, social sciences, political science and tourism. There are also many participants from other fields of study, who are able to take interesting minor courses in an international environment.

The study abroad period will be seen as an asset when entering the job market and competing for jobs later on in life. Ask your home institution about transferring the completed study credits into your degree.

Program Fee

The BIPAS program fee is 1590 € (including VAT) which includes the application fee, tuition fee and course material (not e.g. accommodation, flights or visa). AE has negotiated group discounted tuition fees with its partner universities. Most often the tuition fees at Asian universities are more expensive for free movers finding a study place on their own. Unlike other free movers, non-native English speakers going via AE are not required to take a TOEFL English language proficiency test which costs approximately 185 $.
